2 Step One Draw a 4 X 6 rectangle on grid paper and cut it out.

3 Step 2 Starting at one corner, cut an interesting path to an adjacent corner.

4 Step 3 Slide the piece you cut out onto the opposite edge. Tape the two pieces together, matching the straight edges.

5 Part A Find the area and the perimeter of your new figure.

6 Part B Is the perimeter of the new figure larger than, the same as, or smaller than the perimeter of a 4 X 6 rectangle? Explain.

7 Part C Could you make a figure with an area of 24 square units with a longer perimeter than you found in your first figure? Explain your answer.

8 Follow-up Summarize what you have discovered about figures with an area of 24 units.
