Scale Degree Names

▪Musicians in conversation, or in writing, often refer to scale degrees by a set of traditional names rather than by numbers. ▪Major Scale 1-Tonic 2-Supertonic 3-Mediant 4-Subdominant 5-Dominant 6-Submediant 7 Leading Tone

Scale Degree Names ▪The Mediant (3) lies halfway between the tonic and the dominant ▪The Submediant (6) lies halfway between the tonic and the subdominant ▪The Leading Tone (7) LEADS to the tonic – half step ▪The Subtonic (flat 7) does not lead to the tonic – whole step

Scale Degree Names ▪Sing the solfege: DoReMiFaSoLaTiDo ▪Sing the note names: TonicSupertonicMediantSubdominantDominant SubmediantLeading ToneTonic

Scale Degree Names ▪Name it: ▪35764216▪35764216 ▪3725431▪3725431 ▪52746312▪52746312 ▪7564132▪7564132

Intervals

▪An interval is the measurement of the distance in pitch between two notes ▪A HARMONIC INTERVAL results if the notes are performed at the SAME TIME ▪A MELODIC INTERVAL occurs when the notes are played successively (one after the other) ▪The method of measuring an interval is the same regardless if it’s harmonic or melodic

Intervals ▪There are two parts to any interval name: the numerical name and the modifier that precedes it ▪Let’s talk numerical name first 2 nd 3 rd 4 th 5 th 6 th 7 th 8 th ▪Notice that if BOTH notes are on a line, or BOTH are on a space, its an ODD interval. If one is on a line, and the other on a space, it’s an EVEN interval

Intervals 2 nd 3 rd 4 th 5 th 6 th 7 th Octave ▪In talking about intervals, we say UNISON instead of 1 and OCTAVE instead of 8 – An octave is two of the same pitches, one octave register apart. For example C4 and C5.

Intervals 2 nd 3 rd 4 th 5 th 6 th 7 th Octave ▪Hints: – 2 nd ‘s are ALWAYS offset so that you can clearly see both pitches – 3 rd ’s are always 2 adjacent lines or 2 adjacent spaces – 5 th ’s have one empty line or space in the middle – 7 th ’s have 2 empty lines or spaces in the middle

Sight Singing Introduction This is going to be a COMMON part of this class – if not everyday, at least 2-3 days a week.

Sight Singing ▪When we sight singing, we use SOLFEGE ▪DoReMeFaSolLaTiDo ▪We’ll start singing as a full group, then smaller groups, smaller, and eventually individually – This is a SAFE place. No one will pick on you. Most of us are new to this and we all make mistakes ▪The first ones we’ll do are all by step, to get you used to singing up and down the scale, using solfege, and hearing the pitches

Sight-Singing ▪We will get REALLY GOOD at singing Major 2nds before we move on to 3rds ▪This will take time! It will build your ear and help with dictation down the road
