Finding Segment Length

The Ruler Postulate… So, all we have to do with the Ruler Postulate is subtract the values then take the Absolute Value of the difference.

So how do we find the distance? Find CD (measure of CD) Find DC (measure of DC)

Why use absolute value? Absolute value is used because we are measuring distance. Whether you travel from C to D or D to C your distance will always be positive regardless of direction. Absolute Value tells you the distance from zero on a number line.

So… Be Aware…a plain AB with no symbol stands for “the length of segment AB”

Ex 1: Comparing Segment Lengths

Comparing Segment Length For AB, Suppose you subtract -8 from -5. Do You get the same result? Why?

Segment Addition Postulate

Ex 2

You try…

Midpoint… A midpoint of a segment is a point that divides the segment into two congruent segments. A midpoint, or any line, ray or other segment through a midpoint is said to bisect the segment. Point B bisects Segment AC
