5 The Reality Teaching can be a thankless job. Long hours, low pay, limited advancement. Apathy, hostility, complaints from students. Crowded classrooms. Teachers become disillusioned. 1/2 of all new teachers quit within 5 years. The best teachers balance reality with idealism.

6 Moral Foundation –Student as a responsible citizen Social Foundation –Students involved in community Political Foundation Education = Survival –In this time and place, an education is going to be better… Students: –collaborating and discussing learning –leading their own education –developing initiative, self discipline and empathy. Why Education Matters

10 What Should Be Assessed? Have a Clear Purpose Formative vs. Summative vs. Informative Data Impact Reflect

11 Badmouth other teachers or students. Reinforce the negative - celebrate the positive! Give undeserved praise. Give in to student whining. Celebrate success (no matter how small). Be purposeful. “Burn and learn;” it’s okay! Collaborate with co-workers. Have a sense of humor.
