Uranus By: Natalie, Ashlyn, and Julia

Uranus was named after the Greek god of the sky. Uranus was discovered by Frederick William Herschel while he was surveying the stars. He noticed that one of these “stars” looked different. After studying this “star” for a while he noticed that it orbited around the sun. Discovery and Name

Measurements Order from the SunAdd Info Distance from the Sun 1.8 billion miles Diameter 31,518 miles Mass 86,810,30 0,000,000,000 billion kg. Temperature-212°C Day Length 17 Earth hours Year Length 84 Earth years

Composition and Appearance The surface composition of Uranus is 82.5 The interior composition of Uranus is methane. The appearance of Uranus is a blue green color. The ring composition of Uranus is made of black dust particles and large rocks.

Moons Uranus has 27 moons in all are named after William Shakespere. The names of Uranus’s major moons are Miranda, Ariel, Umbriel, Triton, and Oberon. Some descriptions of Uranus’s moons are large, colorful, and bumpy.

Exploration Voyager 2 – Jan. 24 1986 learned that Uranus has 10 new moons and two new rings. It also learned that Uranus has a tilted magnetic field, and a boiling ocean of water 800 km below the cloud tops.

Unique Facts Uranus is a unique planet. Uranus has a tilted axis. Because of Uranus’ tilted axis, it gives it a tilted magnetic field. Uranus has a stronger magnetic field than Saturn. The length of a year on Uranus is as long as 84 earth years. The length of a day is only 17 earth hours.
