customer contractor Sociologic Research on Awareness of Industrial Property Protection Possibilities December, 2015

2 methodology

3 Research methodology Market and public opinion research company „Spinter tyrimai“ during the period December 3 rd – 23 rd, 2015, carried out business entity survey in Lithuania.  Research objective Evaluate the awareness of the industrial property protection possibilities.  Research Method Standardized CATI (Computer Assisted Telephone Interview). Standardized interview is carried out by professional interviewer. He/She leads the conversation with the respondent following prepared questions and marking the answers in the questionnaire.  Research location All country.  Target group Business entities.  Sample size 1006 respondents.  Sampling method Quota sampling applying company size and field of activity quota.  Data analysis Data analysis was performed using SPSS/PC statistical program. Report presents general distribution (percentages) of the answers, and distribution by social-demographical characteristics (see Appendixes).

4 Statistical error It is impossible to entirely avoid the sampling error in any quantitative research that uses sampling; therefore, it is necessary to take it into consideration while interpreting the data. E.g., after surveying 1006 respondents if we find out that 30,8% of respondents are aware of invention, brand and industrial design protection possibilities, than there is 95 percent probability that the real value is between 27,9% and 33,7%. The precision of the estimation is directly associated with the number of analyzed cases. The table below is helpful in estimating the statistical error. %%%%% 3510152025304050 979590858075706050 N 1003.44.46.07.18.08.79.29.810 2002.43.14.25.05.76.16.56.97.1 3002.02.53.54.14.65.05.35.75.8 4001.72.23.03.64.14.34.64.95.0 500 1.51.92.73.23.63.94.14.44.5 6501.31.72.32.73.13.33.53.83.8 7501.21.62.22.62.93.23.33.63.7 1000 1.11.41.92.32.52.72.93.13.1 20000.71.01.31.61.81.92.02.12.2

14 summary & conclusions

15  Compared to 2014, the awareness of inventions, brands and industrial design protection possibilities has increased (from 26% up to 31%). 43% indicated they have heard about it, however do not know exact protection possibilities.  Over two thirds (69%) of business entities would be willing to register inventions, brands and industrial design in order to protect them: 37% expressed positive opinion (“yes”), while 32% indicated more reserved agreement (“rather yes”). The opposite opinion was expressed by 23% of respondents.  Even though the percent decreased (from 61% down to 56%), State Patent Bureau remains the main institution to turn to in case there is a need to register intellectual property. The 2 nd and 3 rd positions are shared between Lithuanian Authors’ Copyrights and Related Rights Council (decreased from 13% down to 9%) and Centre of Registers (9%). 4% indicated Patent Attorneys of the Republic of Lithuania.  State Patent Bureau information and its public educational tools about inventions, brands or industrial designs have been noticed by 27% of business entities. Summary

16  Every fourth (25%) respondent indicated they are aware of the possibility to acquire invention, brand, industrial design legal protection in whole Europe. Furthermore, one third (33%; increased from 24%) mentioned they had heard about such possibility, however could not indicate the institution responsible for such service.  The most preferred means to receive information about the protection of intellectual property are articles (24%) and newsletters (24%). 17% would prefer to receive such information during direct consultations.  The most convenient information channel is State Patent Bureau webpage (47%). 27% indicated internet news portals.  Databases of inventions, brands, and designs available on the State Patent Bureau website are used by 14% of business entities. Summary

17  Compared to 2014, the awareness of inventions, brands and industrial design protection possibilities among business entities has increased. Furthermore, the percent of those aware of the possibility to acquire invention, brand, industrial design legal protection in whole Europe has also gone up. Yet, only the group that is less aware of it (have heard about it, however could not name exact institutions responsible for such service) is increasing, while the knowing much about it stays the same.  Despite increase in awareness, intentions to register intellectual property in order to protect it have not changed significantly: the part with positive intentions remains at the same level (slightly over two thirds), while minor changes may be noticed only among the group with negative intentions (strict negative opinions are turning into more reserved although still negative attitude).  State Patent Bureau remains the leading institution to turn to in case of need to register inventions, brands and industrial design. Other institutions lag significantly behind. On the other hand, compared to 2014, an increase in the category of no opinions where to turn to in such case is noticed.  Business entities seem to favour more “passive” means and channels to receive the information about the possibilities of intellectual property protection: they would prefer to find such information themselves in State Patent Bureau webpage or internet news portals. While such direct “active” means as newsletters, direct consultations or events are less welcome. Conclusions
