1 Session 8: Particle Acceleration and Transport in Flares and their Relationship to SEP Events Antoun Daou David Alexander Rice University 2011 SHINE WORKSHOP

2 Session I: Flare Particle Acceleration and Transport Tuesday July 12 @ 9:45 a.m. What are the key observations required to distinguish between the effects of photon production, particle transport, particle injection & particle acceleration? electron and proton driven processes? Does anisotropic injection imply anisotopric accelerated spectra? Is the acceleration region separate or co-located with the interaction region? How do we determine this? What physics have we not considered in particle transport studies? e.g. warm plasmas, wave-particle interactions, return currents, …

3 Session II: Relationship to SEP Events Tuesday July 12 @ 2:00 p.m. What role does particle transport play in the observed SEP signatures (composition, spectra, distribution, etc.)? If flares provide the seed particles for subsequent shock acceleration to SEP energies, can we distinguish the source particle properties and how do they relate to that observed at the flare? How are electrons and protons/ions related in SEP events? How does this relate to the flare relationship?
