Bible Reading John 7:1-15, 25-27, 37-44 (p. 1071-72) Reader: Ron MacMaster

John 7:1-15, 25-27, 37-44 Jesus Goes to the Feast of Tabernacles 1 After this, Jesus went around in Galilee, purposely staying away from Judea because the Jews there were waiting to take his life. 2 But when the Jewish Feast of Tabernacles was near, 3 Jesus' brothers said to him, You ought to leave here and go to Judea, so that your disciples may see the miracles you do.

John 7:1-15, 25-27, 37-44 4 No-one who wants to become a public figure acts in secret. Since you are doing these things, show yourself to the world. 5 For even his own brothers did not believe in him. 6 Therefore Jesus told them, The right time for me has not yet come; for you any time is right. 7 The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify that what it does is evil.

John 7:1-15, 25-27, 37-44 8 You go to the Feast. I am not yet going up to this Feast, because for me the right time has not yet come. 9 Having said this, he stayed in Galilee. 10 However, after his brothers had left for the Feast, he went also, not publicly, but in secret. 11 Now at the Feast the Jews were watching for him and asking, Where is that man?

John 7:1-15, 25-27, 37-44 12 Among the crowds there was widespread whispering about him. Some said, He is a good man. Others replied, No, he deceives the people. 13 But no-one would say anything publicly about him for fear of the Jews. Jesus Teaches at the Feast 14 Not until halfway through the Feast did Jesus go up to the temple courts and begin to teach. 15 The Jews were amazed and asked, How did this man get such learning without having studied?

John 7:1-15, 25-27, 37-44 Is Jesus the Christ? 25 At that point some of the people of Jerusalem began to ask, Isn't this the man they are trying to kill? 26 Here he is, speaking publicly, and they are not saying a word to him. Have the authorities really concluded that he is the Christ? 27 But we know where this man is from; when the Christ comes, no-one will know where he is from.

John 7:1-15, 25-27, 37-44 37 On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him. 39 By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.

John 7:1-15, 25-27, 37-44 40 On hearing his words, some of the people said, Surely this man is the Prophet. 41 Others said, He is the Christ. Still others asked, How can the Christ come from Galilee? 42 Does not the Scripture say that the Christ will come from David's family and from Bethlehem, the town where David lived? 43 Thus the people were divided because of Jesus. 44 Some wanted to seize him, but no-one laid a hand on him.

Psalm 139b:7-14* (p. 182) 7Where from your Spirit can I go and hide? And from your presence, LORD, where can I fly? 8If I ascend to heaven, you are there; And in the lowest depths, if there I lie.

Psalm 139b:7-14* (2/4) 9If I take flight upon the wings of dawn And if I settle far beyond the sea, 10There also you will guide me with your hand And still your right hand will keep hold of me.

Psalm 139b:7-14* (3/4) 11If I should say, “The dark will cover me And light around me be as dark as night,” 12Yet even darkness is not dark to you— The night is as the day, the darkness light.

Psalm 139b:7-14* (4/4) 13For you created me and gave me life; Within my mother’s womb you fashioned me. 14I’m fearfully and wonderfully made; I praise you as your mighty works I see.

Sermon John 7:37 Confused About Jesus?

On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. John 7:37

1 - Many People Were Confused About Jesus At least 4 opinions about him… 1 - The Galilean folk. Perhaps Jesus is the Messiah, perhaps he could be the true temple…? 2 - The Judean Jews. V. 11, 13, 35 – Confused and unsure about Jesus; creating a climate of fear.

1 - Many People Were Confused About Jesus 3 - The Jerusalem folk. V. 25 - They are ready to rule Jesus out! 4 - The Temple Leaders. V. 14, 32, 47-48 – Embarrassed, they become more and more determined to get rid of Jesus.

Are you also confused? Who is Jesus?

2 - Many People Became Opposed to Jesus. ‘‘Isn't this the man they are trying to kill?’’ (25, 30) Even bitter enemies came together… to oppose Jesus Christ.

3 - Jesus Calls On You to Decide: Is He the Christ? 15-16, 28-30, 37. He shouted a claim – but was it true? Picture the week long celebration of Tabernacles… with golden pitchers of water carried through the streets then poured out by the altar.

With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation. (ESV)

On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. John 7:37

Horatius Bonar (1846) I heard the voice of Jesus say, “Come unto Me and rest; lay down, thou weary one, lay down Thy head upon My breast.” I came to Jesus as I was, weary and worn and sad; I found in Him a resting place, and He has made me glad.

Horatius Bonar (1846) I heard the voice of Jesus say, “Behold, I freely give The living water; thirsty one, stoop down, and drink, and live.” I came to Jesus, and I drank of that life giving stream; My thirst was quenched, my soul revived, and now I live in Him.

Psalm 143:7-12* (p. 187) 7My spirit fails, O LORD; Come quickly to my side. Hide not your face from me, Lest to the pit I slide. 8 Let morning bring your love anew, For I have put my trust in you.

Psalm 143:7-12* (2/3) To you I lift my soul; Show me the way to go. 9I hide myself in you; LORD, save me from my foe. 10 My God, teach me to do your will; May your good Spirit lead me still.

Psalm 143:7-12* (3/3) 11For your great mercy’s sake, O LORD, preserve my life; And in your righteousness Deliver me from strife. 12 In love, put all my foes to shame; Destroy them, for I bear your name.

IN CHRIST ALONE IN CHRIST ALONE my hope is found, He is my light, my strength, my song; This Cornerstone, this solid Ground, Firm through the fiercest drought and storm.

IN CHRIST ALONE What heights of love, what depths of peace, When fears are stilled, when strivings cease! My Comforter, my All in All, Here in the love of Christ I stand.

IN CHRIST ALONE In Christ alone! - who took on flesh, Fullness of God in helpless babe! This gift of love and righteousness, Scorned by the ones He came to save:

IN CHRIST ALONE Till on that cross as Jesus died, The wrath of God was satisfied – For every sin on Him was laid; Here in the death of Christ I live.

IN CHRIST ALONE There in the ground His body lay, Light of the world by darkness slain: Then bursting forth in glorious Day Up from the grave He rose again!

IN CHRIST ALONE And as He stands in victory Sin's curse has lost its grip on me, For I am His and He is mine – Bought with the precious blood of Christ.

IN CHRIST ALONE No guilt in life, no fear in death, This is the power of Christ in me; From life's first cry to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny.

IN CHRIST ALONE No power of hell, no scheme of man, Can ever pluck me from His hand; Till He returns or calls me home, Here in the power of Christ I'll stand!
