1 Underway Reconnaissance Breakout FULL SPEED: Hull mounted: Hull mounted: 1- MBES 4000-5000m - w/ 0.5 degree resolution - bathy and backscatter - 6000m after 2008 chirp upgrade - 6000m after 2008 chirp upgrade - water column/volume backscatter - inertial system - water column/volume backscatter - inertial system 1- EK-60 – quantitative water column – volume backscatter – 38 kHz at least 1- EK-60 – quantitative water column – volume backscatter – 38 kHz at least 1-Subbottom profiler - Knudsen 320 chirp 1-Subbottom profiler - Knudsen 320 chirp 2-Gravimeter – UNOLS/WHOI Source? – cost??? 2-Gravimeter – UNOLS/WHOI Source? – cost???

2 Underway Reconnaissance Breakout FULL SPEED: Hull mounted: Hull mounted: 1- In Hull Flow thru Water System (surface) 1- TSG 1- Fluorometer 1- CO 2 1- PH 1- O 2 1- nutrients 2- trace metals 2- Samples - plumbing for other sensors /debubbler – plumbing for deep (50-100m) pump deep (50-100m) pump

3 Underway Reconnaissance Breakout FULL SPEED: Hull mounted: Hull mounted: 1- Atmospheric Sensors -- BOW MAST w/motion sensor – and CFD analysis of air flow over hull 1- Standard Weather Package (research quality i.e., fluxes) (~50-60K$) - Wind - Wind - Temperature - Relative Humidity - Barometric Pressure - Radiometer (downwelling and upwelling longwave) 2 -- Radiometer for sea surface skin temp <10K$ 2 - pCO2 2 - PAR (photosynthetic active radiation) - <10K$

4 Underway Reconnaissance Breakout FULL SPEED: Hull mounted: Hull mounted: 1- ADCP – 38 kHz (200k$ ??) 2- ADCP – 150 kHz (75k$ ??) 1- XBT: 800m (<10k$) 2- Wave Recorder -– same motion package as met mast – fixed laser altimeter (Riegl) - (15 – 20k$)

5 Underway Reconnaissance Breakout FULL SPEED: Towed: Towed: 2- Magnetometer cost??? 1.5- Moving Vessel Profiler – deck space and cost issue cost ($500k) – - perhaps underway CTD Ocean Science Oceanside CA (cost???) - perhaps underway CTD Ocean Science Oceanside CA (cost???) 1- Continuous Plankton Recorder – issue of archive and analysis – SAHFOS – Sir Allistar Hardy 2- Passive Acoustic?? Stationary – Navy surplus??? 3- GEK – Geoelectric Kinetograph (surface current) 50k$ 3- Towed Blimp for remote sensing (20k$) 3- UAV??

6 Underway Reconnaissance Breakout FULL SPEED: New Developments: (would be nice priority) New Developments: (would be nice priority) Full speed bio sampling?? Are there ways to design a net or sampling strategy to allow sampling while underway at full speed? Towed pump that can sample water at deeper depths while underway (below seasonal thermocline – 50 – 100m) Hull mounted laser profiler for chlorophyll fluoresence Approaches to automated bird and marine mammal observations Reliable full-speed towed undulating vehicle

7 Underway Reconnaissance Breakout ONCE PER DAY: CTD Rosette - several hours for full depth or partial (top 1000m?) Camera Frame w/ CTD and photos and sampler? Freefall camera w/ CTD? Yes, it's worth it, but what is important ? Water column folks will tell us.

8 Underway Reconnaissance Breakout AUV as underway tool – Broken Stick Surveys?? Questioned efficiency at this point in time but as AUV capabilities evolve – may become much more viable option NOAA has a EAGLE RAY AUV – 2000 m capable w/ EM2000 MBES
