3 + CPD and Education CPD can be defined as, ‘the systematic maintenance, improvement, and broadening of knowledge and skill and the development of personal qualities necessary for the execution of professional and technical duties throughout the practitioners working life,’ (Construction Industry Council, 1986).

6 + The main barriers/tensions that impact CPD amongst schools and other professions Practitioners doubt value of CPD based on past experience or do not believe that engagement will benefit professionally Practitioners see CPD as either getting in the way of their teaching and learning work (marking, preparation and planning) or a tick box exercise set by senior management Logistics including, time, access and cost (especially external events) Overload of content that makes practitioners unable to practise, reflect, enquire and collaborate There is a ‘one-size’ fits all agenda

7 + Summary CPD in education is instrumental and integral for all future practices Both trainee teachers and those with experience should engage with CPD processes CPD should be based on a structured and logical manner that meets with purpose and is linked to developmental plans of schools and educational establishments
