By the end of the workshop you will be able to...... 1. Have an understanding of how we teach maths through number and shape, space and measure. 2. Have some ideas of how you can support your child at home.

Number Reciting numbers in order. Counting reliably – 1:1 correspondence - example of 1:1 correspondenceexample of 1:1 correspondence Recognising numerals 1-20 and putting them in order. Knowing one more or one less than a given number. Recording number through pictures then more formal recording.

Number Adding together two groups of objects to find a total. Using single digit numbers e.g. 6+4=10 Taking away from a group of objects

Number Solve practical problems including – Doubling – ice cream scoops in the café using ‘double’ scoops, Two teddies have come for lunch – now two more have arrived, how many do we have now? How could we record this?

Number Halving – Sharing a group of objects equally between two children – food in a café, cutting fruit for snack in half, sharing toys between friends

Number Children are assessed at the end of the year as either emerging, expected or exceeding. ELG – Children count reliably with numbers from one to 20, place them in order and say which number is one more or one less or one less than a given number. Using quantities and objects, they add and subtract two single digit numbers and count on or back to find the answer. They solve problems, including doubling, halving and sharing. Exceeding - Children estimate a number of objects and check quantities by counting up to 20 and beyond. They solve practical problems that involve combining groups of 2, 5 or 10, or sharing into equal groups. They can use mathematical language to describe how they solved problems. Use mathematical ideas in different contexts.

Shape, Space and Measure Shapes in the environment – describing shapes eg round, flat. Naming 2D and 3D shapes. Describing their position in relation to objects – behind, next to etc. Describe and create patterns – Uses the mathematical vocabulary of size, weight, capacity, distance, time and money.

Shape, Space and Measure As in Number, children are assessed according to whether they are emerging, expected or exceeding in Shape, Space and Measure. ELG - Children use everyday language to talk about size, weight, capacity, position, distance, time and money to compare quantities and objects and to solve problems. They recognise, create and describe patterns. They explore characteristics of everyday objects and shapes and use mathematical language to describe them. Exceeding - Children estimate, measure, weigh and compare and order objects. Talk about properties of shapes, position and time.

Maths Activities Number and shape, space and measure activities are put in different contexts. Maths can be used in construction, role play, outdoors, using computers and Ipads. This helps to consolidate taught ideas and allows the children to explore what they have been taught and how it works. Examples – shop role play, programming apps, measuring buildings, timed activities. Continuously encouraging appropriate use of mathematical language.

Can I help at home? Playing maths games e.g. jigsaws, board games, puzzles. Model maths Use maths in different contexts e.g. whilst shopping. Encourage your child to solve problems. Ask them how they got their answer. Look for shapes in the environment. Choose some food items out of the cupboard. Try to put the objects in order of weight, by feel alone. Check by looking at the amounts on the packets.

Can I help at home? Practise chanting number names. Can you start from different numbers? Can you count in 2’s, 5’s or 10’s. Look for numbers whilst you are out and about. What number would come next? Throwing beanbags/balls at numbered targets and adding up scores – who scored the most? The least? Ask questions like ‘if I took one away how many would I have left? ‘ or if I add one how many have I got now? Use magnetic numbers. Put them in order. Miss one out of a sequence – do they know which one is missing? Most importantly HAVE FUN!
