1 Carbon filter review-September 2003 FEA parameters Design1 h=15000 W/mK 2600W in volume as from Steve Marks and 70mm x 3.5mm beam Footprint. Contact assured only in 2mm strips top and bottom. Design2 Increased contact area to see what is the result (~8mm contact on each side) Design3 same as design1 but considering the laser heatflux on area total 60W and ppd=3.5W/mm2

2 Mat Properties APG Alpha x,z=-1E-6 1/K Alpha y=25E-6 1/K Kx,z=1.6W/mmK Ky=.01W/mmK Cu As from Malcolm Howells E=117000MPa nu=.33 Alpha=16.5e-6 1/K K=.398 W/mmK

12 Testing: 12.3.2 and 8.3.2 beamlines checked. Power not enough. In touch with Richard Nygren at Sandia National Lab in Albuquerque. Doug Berger at Livermore Lab. Jim Savino at CHESS. Peter Stefan and Tom Rabadeau at Stanford. Interfaces: James Wu. Richard Nygren suggested a japanese version of a supergraphite sheet to improve heat transfer contact (see LHD divertor). Stanford uses GaIn (different environment but possible). Still need to contact Ralph Hipple bldg 58 for vacuum chambers and heaters For pressure and shear testings still need to talk to Dan Dietrich. Test plan: we need to carry out some preliminary tests here at the lab Before using a facility like Livermore Lab or Sandia to do some final tests.

13 Cost: Testing facilities cost between 15000 to 20000 dollars per week. We need to think which tests will be more appropriate, in the meantime we will carry out some preliminary tests here (assy and pressure test, contact interface thermal test (?) and contact interface stress test, interface comparison). Schedule: if this review give us the ok, we can start building at least two assys very soon since 90% of detailed dwgs are already done and only few issues need to be addressed. We are probably in need of building some different prototypes for some tests but it shouldn’t take long. Foils: We have 4 free samples of APG from K-Technology Inc. I am still waiting for a quote of the ZYB HOPG from Advanced Ceramics (these will be more expensive foils, flatter than the previous ones, we wanted to have some to compare the results).
