2 Stage 2 of the Savior’s Summons to Satisfaction OVERVIEW OF 3:8–20: o The Charge to Wait for the Lord (3:8a) o The Dual Basis of the Charge to the Wait (3:8b–10) o The Ultimate Motivation of the Charge to Wait (3:11–20) The promise that the Lord will not put Jerusalem to shame (3:11–13) A parenthetical call to rejoice in salvation (3:14–15) The promise that the Lord will bring consummate salvation (3:16–20)

3 The promise of save completely (3:19–20) o God declares his promise (3:19): The timing: “at that time” The promise: o He will put down oppressors (see 3:11, 15) o He will deliver and redeem the weak and outcast (cf. Mic 4:6–7; Matt 11:4–5; John 11:50–52)

4 o He will establish them for his glory. Deut 26:18–19. And the LORD has declared today that you are a people for his treasured possession, as he has promised you, and that you are to keep all his commandments, 19 and that he will set you in (= for) praise and in (= for) fame and in honor high above all nations that he has made, and that you shall be a people holy to the LORD your God, as he promised. HebrewESVYLT (1898) And-I-will-place-them for-praise and-for-a name in-all the-land of-their-shame. And I will change their shame into praise and renown in all the earth. And [I] have set them for a praise and for a name, In all the land of their shame.

5 o He will establish them for his glory. Deut 26:18–19 Jer 13:11. I made the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah cling to me, declares the LORD, that they might be for me a people, a name, a praise, and a glory, but they would not listen. And [I] have set them for a praise and for a name, In all the land of their shame.

And the city [Jerusalem] shall be to me a name of joy, a praise and a glory before all the nations of the earth who shall hear of all the good that I do for them. And [I] have set them for a praise and for a name, In all the land of their shame.

And the nations will know that I am the LORD, declares the Lord GOD, when through you I vindicate my holiness before their eyes. 8 o He will establish them for his glory. Deut 26:18–19 Jer 13:11 Jer 33:9 Ezek 36:23 Zech 9:16–17. On that day the LORD their God will save them, as the flock of his people; for like the jewels of a crown they shall shine on his land. 17 For how great is his goodness, and how great his beauty! 9 o God reinforces his promise more personally (3:20) The promise: He will gather you to himself The reason he will redeem: “I will make you for a name and for praise among all the peoples of the earth.”

10 Takeaway Stand fearless before others and persevere in hope. For God’s sake, delight in the Lord who shows his sovereign care for his people by rescuing them from their enemies.
