1 The 5 Themes of Geography
How we look at the world, both past and present

2 A compass rose is a design on a map that shows directions.
It shows north, south, east, west, northeast, northwest, southeast, and southwest.

3 “Where is it?” Geographers begin to study a place by finding where it is, or its location. There are two ways to talk about location. Absolute Location: the exact spot of a place on the earth’s surface. Latitude and Longitude Relative Location: tells where a place is by comparing what is around it. Charlotte is in the Piedmont portion of North Carolina Location

4 Two Types of Location: Absolute and Relative
Absolute and Relative location are two ways of describing the positions and distribution of people and places on the earth's surface. Two Types of Location: Absolute and Relative

5 Absolute location = Where is it?
Absolute location answers the questions: Where is it? Absolute location is nothing more than a simple dot--often identified as a grid coordinate on the surface of the earth. Latitude and longitude can be used to pinpoint a location. For example, if the absolute location of Charlotte, North Carolina, is 30 degrees north, 90 degrees west. Finding absolute location is the starting point for geographic research.

6 Longitude – East to West
NFL Quarterback Cam Newton of practices Longitude after scoring touchdowns. Longitude measures East to West, By opening his shirt, as Superman does, Cam displays longitude when extending his arms from East to West. Let’s practice being Cam Newton after a touchdown: Arms on chest, Superman, Extend Arms from East to West, Touchdown, err…..Repeat: Longitude, Longitude, Longitude, Longitude, Longitude.

7 Latitude – North to South
Now let’s practice latitude. Imagine you are climbing a ladder. Show us how it would look. Since we are strong, imagine climbing that ladder with only your arms. How does that look? Latitude measures North to South. Let’s practice being climbing the ladder using only our arms. Repeat: Latitude, Latitude, Latitude, Latitude, Latitude.

8 Relative location = What is it near?
Relative location is the relationship of a place to other places. For example, Lake Norman is surrounded by Mecklenburg, Lincoln, Catawba and Iredell County, which gives access to residents of each county. Your home has a relative location. Where is it located in relation to schools, stores, and convenient transportation?

9

10 Location is only one piece of the framework of geography, yet it is an important theme because it helps us know and express where things are.

11 Summarizing Activity: Based on what you learned about the locations in which your shoes were made, give the relative directions using the continent(s) and/or ocean(s) did they may have crossed to arrive in Homework 9/3/15: None Where does summary go?: Bottom of page 6 in your notebook
