The draft submission introduces the test environment and metrics necessary for traceable over-the-air performance testing of the wireless radios in 802.11 devices.

Foegelle, ETS-LindgrenSlide 5 Traceable OTA Test Environment Introduction and Purpose Describes the test system required for performing traceable over-the-air RF performance tests on 802.11 DUTs. Specifies system components and associated measurement quality. Addresses combined radio and antenna related performance of single DUTs –in free-space –in free-space with near-field loading –with other impairments Introduces bulk performance metrics total radiated power (TRP) and total isotropic sensitivity (TIS) and related metrics. Traceable nature of measurements allows comparison of DUTs tested in different systems to within a known level of measurement uncertainty.

Foegelle, ETS-LindgrenSlide 6 Traceable OTA Test Environment Configuration Defines test system consisting of: –Fully anechoic chamber for isolation and free-space environment –Multi-axis positioning system for spherical pattern measurement. –Dual polarized measurement antenna. –Traceable RF test equipment for measuring power and sensitivity of DUT (based on conducted test methods). –Near field phantoms for different physical use cases.

Note: This section is part of training documentation I’ve written in the past. Portions of this section were submitted to the CTIA and published verbatim as part of their OTA test plan, but rights to distribute original content were maintained. Can pursue official release from CTIA if needed. –Various other uncertainty contributions and points of concern.

Many of these have customers or are owned by manufacturers who wish to perform TRP and TIS testing of 802.11 devices. To ensure the traceability of results between labs, it is not enough to use traceable test equipment; they must also follow equivalent test procedures. Standards already exist for other wireless technologies. This proposal mirrors those procedures for 802.11. Per the PAR, 802.11.2 was intended to provide this type of standardization for these labs. The methodology proposed here belongs in 802.11.2.
