Ionic Bonding

Chemical bond-the attractive force that holds atoms of ions together What was an ion? How are they formed? Ionic Bond- a bond formed between attraction between oppositely charged particles Ionic bonds TRANSFER electrons Ionic bonds combine a metal with a nonmetal

Metals are substance that are shiny and conduct heat and electricity well. Nonmetal do not conduct heat and electricity well.

Metals form + ions (cations) Nonmetals form – ions (anions) Opposite charges attract each other

Sodium (Na) is in group 1 and forms +1 ions. Chlorine (Cl) is in group 7 and forms -1 ions.

Draw the formation of the ionic bonds. ◦Draw the atoms and label them metal or nonmetal ◦Show the electron movement and the ions formed LiCl

Draw the formation of the ionic bonds. ◦Draw the atoms and label them metal or nonmetal ◦Show the electron movement and the ions formed BeO

Draw the formation of the ionic bonds. ◦Draw the atoms and label them metal or nonmetal ◦Show the electron movement and the ions formed MgS

Criss Cross Method When you know the charge of ions you can write the chemical formula for an ionic compound. Calcium Chloride Magnesium Bromide Potassium Sulfide

When you use the criss cross method and the subscripts (little numbers) are the same you can drop both subscripts Sodium Chloride Magnesium Oxide
