4. Fluxus films - Characteristics Are considered critiques of main-stream film Depict very minimal action Highly poetic, meditative and often playful “Lifelike art” – bridging the gap between art and life

5. -Were created in opposition to mainstream culture -Were often characterized by: -the absence of linear narrative -the use of various abstracting techniques: out-of-focus, scratching on film, rapid editing, the absence of sound Avant-Garde Films

7. Video & Performance Art Performance art was born in New York in the 60s as the result of cross fertilization between theater, dance, film, video and visual art. Some well known artists who worked in this medium: -Joan Jonas -Nam June Paik -Vito Acconci -Chris Burden

8. Vito Acconci (b. 1940) -A New York-based visual artist -Began his career in late 60s as a poet & writer -Transformed himself into a performance and video artist by using his own body as a subject for photography, video, etc.
