2 Love One Another John 13:31-35

3 Review It is the Passover which began Thursday evening
Jesus and His 12 apostles are gathered in an upper room where they ate the meal together The apostles were still bickering about who would be greatest in the kingdom Jesus washed their feet to show that they should all be servants, not lords Jesus announced He would be betrayed and identified Judas as the betrayer Judas left Now Jesus has some further things to teach His remaining apostles

4 Glory (Honor, Magnify) John 13:31-32
Jesus has often equated His glorification with His death, burial and resurrection (Jn 12:23) Jesus and the Father have spoken of the same as glorifying the Father (Jn 12:27-28) With the departure of Judas, everything has been set in motion Jesus will be glorified, and that is so certain in His mind, He speaks of it as finished And if the Son is glorified, then God is glorified through the actions of the Son And if God is glorified through the Son, then God is glorified will give glory to the Son and will do so quickly

5 Where I am going John 13:33 Jesus had already told the Jews He was going somewhere they could not come (Jn 7:34-36; 8:21-22) The Jews didn’t understand where He was going Even though He explained it to them (Jn 8:23-29) Now Jesus tells His apostles that He is leaving them as well Our next lesson will look at His leaving in more detail

6 A new commandment John 13:34-35 Jesus says He has a new commandment
But what was “new” about it? The command to love was not new Lev 19:18 Matt 22:37-40 The depth /quality of that love has changed Was “as you love yourself” Now “as I have loved you” A sacrificial love (John 15:13; Eph 5:1-2)

7 A new commandment What else made this commandment “new”?
A visible and distinguishing love Not just words but deeds (1 Jn 3:16-18) Would be recognized by the world (unbelievers) Some religions are distinguished by The food they eat The clothes they wear Their titles Their education Their social programs, etc Can the world see that you are a Christian without being told? Would it surprise others to learn that you are a Christian?

8 How do we develop this love?
Taught by God 1 Thes 4:9-10 How does He teach us? 1 Jn 4:7-11 By His example, sending His Son to die for us while we were in sin Taught by Jesus 1 Jn 3:16 The more you think about and appreciate what Jesus did, the more likely you’ll show love Stirred up by the brethren Heb 10:24-25 One reason some don’t love as they should is that they don’t assemble as they should

9 When and where do we show our love?
In our assembly When we are assembled and have visitors, we have an opportunity to demonstrate our love for one another What do visitors see? Do they see Christians who... Are glad to see one another? Are willing to take the time to visit with each other? Know each other's problems and concerns? Do not think they need one another?

10 When and where do we show our love?
In our community Most of the world won’t see us in our assembly They’ll see our love or lack of it everywhere else At work Perhaps we work with other Christians Can the world see the difference in the way we deal with those brethren (employers / employees/ fellow-workers) At home Perhaps we have family or neighbors that are Christians Can the world see your sacrificial love for them At school Perhaps we have teachers or fellow-students who are Christians, can others tell who they are by our actions Can our community see our love? Eph 4:32, Col 3:12-14

11 Conclusion Jesus gave a powerful tool to persuade the world that we are His disciples Certainly we show our discipleship by faithfulness to His doctrine (Jn 8:32) But the world will care little about doctrine until they see it in actions they can appreciate How is your love for your brother in Christ? Is it a Christ-like, sacrificial love? Is it observable in all aspects of our life?
