3 ONE STEP OR TWO? Rosie is 23 pound heavier than her brother, Isaac. He weighs 15 pounds. How much do they weigh together?

4 COMPARISON LET’S TRY IT: 199 men worked in a factory. 19 more women than men work in the factory. How many people work in the factory?

5 PRACTICE PROBLEMS Alice saved $290. She saved $159 less than her brother. How much did the two of them save altogether?

6 Juan, Maria and Sara collected 130 stamps altogether. Juan collected 3 times as many stamps as Maria. Sara collected 34 stamps. How many stamps did Juan collect? Note: We never say 3 times more. That makes for a confusing problem. PRACTICE PROBLEMS

14 TEACHING STRATEGIES Use students’ names in problems. Take the numbers out of the problem. Show one sentence at a time. Ask students to predict the question. Have students visualize. Write a sentence with a blank. Fill in the numbers. Draw the model and solve.
