Ch. 7-2 Earth in Space Earth’s Moon

Moon’s features 1. Dark areas of the moon’s surface are called maria. Galileo named them maria because they reminded him of the oceans.

Moon’s features 2. Maria may have formed when lava from inside the Moon flowed into large bowl like areas on the surface of the Moon.

Moon features 3. Light colored areas on the Moon are called lunar highlands. They are higher than maria.

Moon features 4. Craters are depressions on the moon caused by large meteorites. Maria are flat and craters are round.

Quiz time! Write your answer on pg. 106 in your workbook? (1.)Describe what causes craters on the moon.

Quiz time! Check your answer (1.)Craters are caused when meteorites hit the moon’s surface.

Moon’s interior 5. 1 st layer-Crust, 60 km-150 km. 2 nd layer-Solid Mantle-900 km- 950 km. 3 rd layer- Soft mantle- 500 km 4 th layer- Solid iron-rich Core- 300 km-450 km.

Moon’s interior 6. The moon is most like the Earth’s two outer layers the mantle and the core.

Quiz time! Write your answer on pg. 106 in your workbook? (2.)List the layers of the Moon starting with the core.

Quiz time! Check your answer (2.)Core, soft mantle, solid mantle, crust

Motions of the Moon 7. It takes 27.3 days for the Moon to complete one orbit around the Earth. The Moon also takes 27.3 days to rotate once on its axis. “Period of rotation=period of revolution”

Motions of the Moon 8. Because the rotation = revolution the same side of the Moon always faces the Earth.

Motions of the Moon 9. The Moon rotates on its axis and revolves around the Earth in a regular cycle of change that we see on Earth as Moon Phases.

Quiz time! Write your answer on pg. 107 in your workbook? (3.) What layers of Earth is the Moon most like in density? (4.) What stays the same about the Moon during its rotation and revolution?

Quiz time! Check your answer (3.) Mantle and crust (4.) The same side of the Moon faces the Earth.

Motions of the Moon 10. We see the Moon because it reflects sunlight. Moon phases are changing views of the Moon as seen from Earth.

Moon Phases 11. New Moon-When the Moon is between the Earth and the Sun.

Moon Phases 12. Waxing- growing in size. This happens after the new moon, when more and more of the side facing Earth is lighted.

Quiz time! Write your answer on pg. 108 in your workbook? (5.) Why do we see the moon?

Quiz time! Check your answers. (5.) We see the Moon because it reflects sunlight.

Moon Phases 13. Waxing Crescent- Occurs 24 hours after a new moon. A thin sliver of light on the right side of the moon can be seen.

Moon Phases 14. 1 st Quarter-The right half of the Moon is lighted. 15. Waxing Gibbous-More than half of the right side is lighted.

Moon Phases 16. Full Moon- When all of the side facing Earth is lighted. The Earth is between the Sun and the Moon. 17. Waning-When the amount of light begins to decrease.

Moon Phases 18. Waning Gibbous-More than half of the left side is lighted. 19. 3 rd Quarter-Half of the left side is lighted.

Moon Phases 20. Waning Crescent-A thin sliver of light on the left side of the moon can be seen. The Moon continues to wane until its time for the new moon again.

Eclipses 21. Eclipses occur only when the Sun, Moon, and Earth are lined up perfectly. They happen only a few times because the Moon’s orbit is tilted at an angle from Earth’s orbit.

Eclipses 22. During a New Moon, a Solar eclipse occurs if Earth moves into the Moon’s shadow.

Eclipses 23. Umbra- The darkest part of the Moon’s shadow where a total eclipse occurs.

Eclipses 24. Penumbra- The lighter part of the Moon’s shadow where a partial eclipse occurs.

Eclipses 25. Lunar eclipse- occurs when the Sun, Earth, and the Moon are lined up. The full moon moves into the Earth’s shadow.
