2 What's the Common Name for Huntington's?
The Common name for this disease is Huntington's Chorea. Chorea meaning abnormal movements of voluntary movement.

3 Any Causes? Huntington's is caused by a mutation in a gene on the specific chromosome 4. A parent with this disease has a 50 percent chance of passing it on to their children.

4 Target Population? Huntington's does not discriminate, anybody can have it. It usually develops between ages 30 and 50 but can appear as early as 2 years old as late as 80 years old.

5 Does It affect the CNS or PNS?
It affects the Basal Ganglia part of the brain that controls movement,emotion and cognitive thinking. It affects the CNS huntingtons attacks the organs that carry out the many roles of the nervous system.

6 Symptoms? Symptoms include:Poor memory,depression/mood swings,lack of coordination,twitching or uncontrolled movements,Difficulty speaking/walking & swallowing.

7 What's The Outcome? In the late stages of huntington's a person will need assistance with simple tasks such as getting dressed,getting to destinations,etc.

8 Cures Or Treatments? Unfortunately there is no cure for huntington's or a way to stop the brain changes it causes. Chorea(involuntary movements) experts recommend an atypical antipsychotic drug. For severe anger they recommend an anti- psychotic drug. Non-threatening irritability try the antidepressant "serotonin reuptake inhibitor."

9 Celebrity Spokesman American singer-songwriter Woody Guthrie eventually inherited Huntington's Disease from his mother who was afflicted with it after her death in 1930. He died from complications in 1967.

10 Organizations The Huntington's Disease Society of America- Goal is to promote & support research and medical efforts to eradicate HD. Also to educate people about what the disease is about.
