3 Background & Context of the Conflict in the Southern Border Provinces of Thailand Conflicts between the state and the people in the three Southern border provinces of Thailand, especially those who are Malay Muslims, have persisted since the past. Historical records tracing back to Sukhothai era show Pattani as an independent State However, the relationship pattern of the state and the people of Pattani have alternately shifted according to the central policies of the region

5 From Siam to Thailand: National Identity through Assimilation Thus the main origin of conflict comes from the goal of assimilating everyone to be a Thai that the state once a Thai to be. –For instance in 1941 there were regulations to put Buddha images in all Islamic public schools, and there were dress codes for Muslim according to the state. If not followed, pubic services were withheld. All of these have had great affects on the minds of the Malay Muslim population.
