Dates:Tuesdays,Oct.1 – Nov.12 Time: 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm Location: Victor Scott School

Learning Objectives In this session, Mathematicians will: O Sort 3D shapes based on their geometric properties. O Visualize, predict, identify, and construct a 3D shape from a 2D net.

Shape Sort O You will work in groups to sort the three-dimensional (solid) shapes. O You may use 2 – 4 categories. O Once your group has decided on the categories, write them beside your groups of shapes.

Reflect & Connect How did you decide to sort your shapes? Explain your reasonings.

ENGAGE – Mystery Bag Describe the object in the mystery bag to the class. Use words that you have been using in class to describe the shape.

Task 1 - What’s my SHAPE? 5 points total for completed journal entries. Each student has been given a net of a shape. In your group, you can discuss your answers. Each student will complete the following in their math journal and construct their own shape. Predict: What shape do you think this net will create when folded together? State the names of each 2D shape shown in this net. Students will then construct the 3D shape from their net. Observe: What is the name of this shape? Explain: Why do you think this name was given to this shape? State an example of this shape in real-life Draw your 3D shape on isometric paper. When I finish, I move onto Task 2.

Reflect & Connect Representative Share One member of group will share what they learned about their 3D shape.

Explicit Teaching Draw your 3D shape

Task 2 - Is it a CUBE? 5 points total for completed journal entries. 1.Visualise at first, whether the net shown in the picture will form a closed cube or not. Write your prediction in your journal 2.Then use linking squares or cut out the picture to determine whether each net does create a cube or not. Write a statement in your journal explaining your answer. 3.On the square paper, draw the net of a cube that would form a closed cube.

Reflect & Connect Representative Share 3 students representatives (one from each group) will explain whether each of the nets was a cube or not. Show their net on the Elmo.
