2 MANY HATS = CAMPUS VISIBILITY Teacher/Scholar: The best known and sometimes least utilized hat for academic libraries! “Library as instructional agent”

3 MANY HATS = CAMPUS VISIBLITY Conference organizer and exhibitor: usually a “public library thing.” Helps to have a good looking facility. Space is critical! “Library as venue”

4 MANY HATS = CAMPUS VISIBILITY Campus Webmaster: Libraries have been tech centers for years. Get credit for what you can do! “Library as tech center”

5 MANY HATS = CAMPUS VISIBILITY Consortium Coordinator: libraries have had to “share” for a long time. Make it work for you! “Library as builder of bridges to other organizations”

6 MANY HATS = CAMPUS VISIBILITY Friends of the Library: another “public library” thing that should be a part of Every academic library! “Library as part of the community”

7 MANY HATS = CAMPUS VISIBILITY Not unusual for librarians to “wear many hats” More important than ever to “try on new hats” Need to develop new activities that will increase your department’s visibility on campus Can be keyed to any budget or staff constraints One BIG requirement: YOUR TIME!

8 How to become an instructional agent First shot: bibliographic instruction –Establish your credibility Freshman studies Subject specialty –Create ties with faculty members –Market yourself –Be innovative

9 How to make your library a venue Can be keyed to curriculum Can be a special event Requires a long lead time Funding is sometimes available (Yes, you can write a grant proposal!) Flexibility is key

10 How to make your library a tech center Computers are already in the library Websites are easy to do –ANYONE can be a webmaster Libraries are more user friendly than computer centers Create a library website, then expand Find the “hole” in the campus website

11 How to make the library a builder of bridges Improving services for users through cooperative ventures Contact your closest competitors Don’t be afraid to negotiate

12 How to start a Friends group Find out who is in your community Find out what they need/want Mass mailing/marketing campaign/internet site Co-sponsor campus activities

13 MANY HATS = CAMPUS VISIBLITY Well worth the time and effort Will increase visibility and by default, support Make the library the true heart of the campus (even though we always knew it was!)

14 MANY HATS = CAMPUS VISIBILITY One final hat to add to your collection: –The Team Player (Also practical for those budget scrimmages…)
