2. What were the problems with early flight? There were many, but they were all based on the four forces of flight; Thrust, lift, drag and weight.

3. Some Examples The following slides contain a few set-backs to early aircraft relating to the forces of flight.

4. Thrust Not enough thrust. Too much thrust. Wrong engine. Needs different petrol. Too noisy. Too much exhaust gasses. Not the right speed for take-off. Too slow for take-off. Can not fly at these speeds.

5. Drag The air flow is wrong. The plane is not aerodynamic. Not enough thrust to overcome drag. Can not fly in winds. The plane flies too slow. Too much turbulence. The plane is made from the wrong materials.

6. Lift Wings are not airfoil. Not enough lift. Can not control the lift. Plane is wrong material. Air flow is disrupted. Air pressure around the plane is too high/low. Plane is not right shape.

7. Weight The plane is too heavy. The engine is too heavy. Not enough lift to overcome weight. Particular parts of the plane are too heavy/light. Can not carry passengers. Not able to lift cargo.

8. Sea Planes As aircraft evolved there were always new challenges, such as creating a plane that can take-off/land on water. The following are some of the problems that got in the way of a successful seaplane in it’s time.

9. The plane does not float. The plane can not balance on the water. The landing gear is wrong. Not able to reach high speeds. Too small for passesngers.

11. Extremely dangerous for pilots. The propeller was in the way of the gun Planes were delicate & prone to damage. Carrying pay-loads was a difficulty. Most planes had faulty engines & lacked in performance. Planes were made cheaply with many flaws; eg. Bad landing gear.
