2 Our Information Report
The 1956 Olympics were held in Melbourne, Australia. Over 3,000 athletes participated in one hundred and forty five events in seventeen different sports. They started on the 22nd of November 1956 and ended on the 8th of December 1956.

3 The games were almost cancelled due to an armed conflict in Europe and Africa. The Russians had invaded Hungary while the British and the French attacked Egypt in order to regain control of it.

4 The Melbourne Olympics were the first ever time the games we held outside of Europe as well as Africa. In Europe, the Russians invaded Hungary, while the British and French attacked Egypt in order to regain Suez Canal.

5 The Melbourne Olympics was the first ever time the games were held outside of Europe and the United States. It was the first ever Olympics to be held in the southern hemisphere. 6 countries pulled out of the Olympics China, British, France, Spain, Switzerland and Netherlands.

6 It was the first Olympics games ever to make all the athletes walk together in the closing ceremony. Also it was the first games where live television captured the public’s imagination.
