5 NHSC Cycle 1 Open Time Proposal Planning Workshop 3-4 June 2010 NASA Herschel Science Center - page 5 PACS What is required for the ESA AO call for Telescope Time You MUST register as Herschel User at the ESA Herschel Site http://herschel.esac.esa.int/registration.shtmlhttp://herschel.esac.esa.int/registration.shtml Download the CORRECT VERSION of the HERSCHEL PDFLaTeX PACKAGE (one for “normal=up to 100hrs, one for “large”=100 hrs or more) http://herschel.esac.esa.int/Tools.shtml#HerschelFORMhttp://herschel.esac.esa.int/Tools.shtml#HerschelFORM WRITE PROPOSAL AND PLAN OBSERVATIONS WITH HSPOT (Check for Duplications) It is mandatory to supply a complete set of AORs Submit the proposal via HSpot YOU MUST BE A REGISTERED USER TO DO THIS (more on how to do this on Friday morning) Proposal can only be submitted by PI The PI can update the proposal as many times as they like up to the proposal deadline. Submit early—submit often! US-based investigators can request funding from NASA under the separate NASA Call for Proposals which has a due-date of August 2 (10 days after the ESA deadline—see next slide) You MUST register as Herschel User at the ESA Herschel Site http://herschel.esac.esa.int/registration.shtmlhttp://herschel.esac.esa.int/registration.shtml Download the CORRECT VERSION of the HERSCHEL PDFLaTeX PACKAGE (one for “normal=up to 100hrs, one for “large”=100 hrs or more) http://herschel.esac.esa.int/Tools.shtml#HerschelFORMhttp://herschel.esac.esa.int/Tools.shtml#HerschelFORM WRITE PROPOSAL AND PLAN OBSERVATIONS WITH HSPOT (Check for Duplications) It is mandatory to supply a complete set of AORs Submit the proposal via HSpot YOU MUST BE A REGISTERED USER TO DO THIS (more on how to do this on Friday morning) Proposal can only be submitted by PI The PI can update the proposal as many times as they like up to the proposal deadline. 6 NHSC Cycle 1 Open Time Proposal Planning Workshop 3-4 June 2010 NASA Herschel Science Center - page 6 PACS The NASA Call for Proposals for Data Analysis (DA) Funding Consult the NHSC Proposal Page https://nhscsci.ipac.caltech.edu/sc/index.php/Proposals/Proposals and especially read carefully the call itself https://nhscsci.ipac.caltech.edu/NHSC/uploads/Proposals/CP1_20May2010.pdf If Proposal is led by a US-based PI- they should be the PI of the NASA funding proposal, if a foreign PI, then a NASA PI should be designated. Before submitting a proposal, make sure your institution allows you be to a PI on a funded proposal All DA proposals linked to Herschel OT1 programs selected by ESA for execution should be funded. The funding will be determined formulaically by the NHSC. The amount of funding will depend on the amount of effort to be provided by US-based investigators in support of the program as well as the program size and complexity. A full description of the “funding instrument” (e. g. RSA/CREI etc) is in the Call and will not be repeated here WHAT TO SUBMIT 1 Coversheet (web-based) filled in at the special website (Accessed through Proposals URL above) 2 Copy of the Telescope proposal PDF. NOTE: Since the funding is formulaic—no budget is necessary. Questions about the call can be sent to the NHSC helpdesk. Do not send requests for help on the NHSC Call to the ESA helpdesk as they may not get answered in a timely manner. We will support the helpdesk fully up to the deadline. 7 NHSC Cycle 1 Open Time Proposal Planning Workshop 3-4 June 2010 NASA Herschel Science Center - page 7 PACS The NASA DA proposal coversheet You will need the ESA Proposal # and title Only one proposal per ESA proposal All US Co-I requesting funding should be listed You will need to name a NASA PI if you are a Co-I of a foreign-led proposal A proposal whose Principal Investigator is not affiliated with a U.S.-based institution should expect to be funded at no more than half the full funding level for the equivalent proposal with a U.S.-based Principal Investigator.
