4 Boston Tea Party 1773 a group of colonists dumped a large load of British tea into Boston Harbor They were protesting a tax on tea King George III ordered the British Navy to close the port

5 1st Continental Congress
Philadelphia, September 1774 Protested the treatment of Boston Tried to persuade Parliament to change by cutting off trade with England.

6 2nd Continental Congress
Philadelphia, 1775 Voted to raise an army and organize under the command of George Washington; beginning the American Revolution 1776 Declaration of Independence

7 Enlightenment & Revolution
Colonists used Enlightenment ideas to justify their rebellion. According to Locke, they had an obligation to rebel against an unjust ruler.
