3 The Tower of London It was built by William the Conqueror (King William I) It was used as a FORTRESS, PRISON and royal palace Fortress = a building to DEFEND, it is difficult for ENEMIES to enter, and it PROTECTS the people inside They have HIGH, THICK, STONE WALLS, and VERY SMALL WINDOWS.

4 It is situated next to the River Thames and the Tower Bridge. Today it is owned by the Royal Family. Exotic animals were kept by Kings and Queens e.g. Lions and Bears

5 Things that have happened… 1483 the two sons of King Edward IV were sent to the Tower and were never seen again... 1536, Queen Anne Boleyn, the wife of King Henry VIII was arrested and later beheaded at the Tower The Tower of London is the place where the CROWN JEWELS have been since 1303. The Crown Jewels were nearly STOLEN in 1671.

6 NOW Today, you can VISIT the Crown Jewels, see the BEEFEATERS, look at Royal ARMOUR and see where the exotic animals were kept

7 Yeomen Warders Known as “BEEFEATERS” They are the guards of the Tower of London They are also tour guides at the Tower of London They used to work in the military

8 King Henry VIII 1491-1547 King Henry was the King of England from 1509 to1547 He is most famous for having wives. He lived in the Royal Palace at the Tower of London What happened to his wives….?

9 Catherine of Aragon, gave birth to a daughter Divorced Anne Boleyn, gave birth to a daughter Put in the Prison of Tower of London and beheaded Jane Seymour, gave birth to a son, but died Anne of Cleeves, unhappy and divorced Catherine Howard, beheaded for adultery Catherine Parr, lived!!
