1 -What are natural resources?
LESSON 1 -What are natural resources? READ: A natural resource is anything which we take to use from the natural environment. fish, trees, wheat, oil, water, cotton, iron ore, gold etc. etc. When a natural resource is taken from the environment it is called a raw material e.g. the rock that iron ore is found in, a tree cut down in a forest, a fish caught in the ocean Before we can use many natural resources, they usually have to be extracted from the environment, processed in a factory, then transported to where we want to use it. What we need and want are called the demand. The natural resources are called the supply.

2 This kind of fishing is called “trawling” Wheat farming Producing Hydro-electric power Drilling for oil Logging Rock containing iron – “iron ore”

3 What is a natural resource?
COPY THE INFORMATION INTO YOUR ORGANIZER: Definition: A natural resource is anything which we take to use from the natural environment. Examples: fish, trees, wheat, oil, water, cotton, iron ore, gold…. ADD YOUR OWN EXAMPLES IF YOU HAVE TIME

4 What are raw materials? COPY THE INFORMATION INTO YOUR ORGANIZER:
Definition: When a natural resource is taken from the environment it is called a raw material. Examples: -rock that contains iron (iron ore) taken from a mine -a tree cut down in a forest -a fish caught in the ocean -salt in ocean water -silty mud taken from the bottom of a river ADD YOUR OWN EXAMPLES

5 What are demand and supply?
COPY THE INFORMATION INTO YOUR ORGANIZER: If people need something, it is called the “demand”. Example: There is a huge demand these days for micro chips/semi-conductors for modern technology. Finding and using natural resources to meet the demand is called the “supply”. Example: Semiconductors are made from silicon. It is a common mineral found in sand. It is mined to meet the demand.

6 What is “processing” of raw materials?
Most “raw materials” have to be changed before we can use them. This is called “processing”. Raw materials are “processed” to create “products” that we can use. COPY THE DEFINITION: Processing: changing a natural resource (raw material) so we can use it. Copy the chart on page 203 into your organizer to give examples of natural resources (raw materials), processing, and products. An oil refinery Fuels we get from oil Be aware… Oil also gives other products

7 Processing – Making Jeans
On page 203, read the paragraph “Processing Resources”. In point form, write a step by step procedure for making jeans. The finished product Cotton field

8 Unit 1: Natural Resources
Read and study pages in your textbook… Create a title page for this unit titled Unit 1: Natural Resources It should include illustrations of the images seen on slide 3, as well as key terms for the unit.
