2 The specific heat capacity of a solid or liquid is defined as the heat required to raise unit mass of substance by one degree of temperature. This can be stated by the following equation:

3 where, Q= Heat supplied to substance, m= Mass of the substance, c= Specific heat capacity, T= Temperature rise. Specific Heat Gases There are two definitions of Specific Heat for vapors and gases: c p = Specific Heat at constant pressure (kJ/kg o C) c v = Specific Heat at constant volume (kJ/kg o C)

4 The specific heat of water is 1 calorie/gram °C = 4.186 joule/gram °C Gas Constant The gas constant can be expressed as R = c p - c v where R = Gas Constant Ratio of Specific Heat The Ratio of Specific Heat is expressed k = c p / c v
