ANT318 ARCHAEOLOGICAL FIELD WORK

WHAT IS IT? A hands on way to learn Archaeological fieldwork methods outside of a classroom. 2 week excavation in the summer followed by weekly practicals. Depending on the year, you can learn about prehistoric or historic sites!

WHO TEACHES IT? Dr. Michael Brand He runs the historic archaeological field school The TA is Nattha Chuenwattana, better known as Jo! In the field he had assistance from Dr. Emily Holland and Joel Cahn.

WHERE DID IT TAKE PLACE? North of campus, beside the principal’s house and to the right of principal’s road (off the credit river). The site we were focusing on was “Mount Woodham”

WHY DID YOU WORK THERE? We were interested in the material remains of the Schreiber family, and the remains of structures in which they had once lived. These structures – Mount Woodham, Iverholme and Lislehurst – have historical significance in the Erindale region. Charlotte Schreiber, married to Weymouth, was a prominent artist in the area. She sold the property to Reginald Watkins in 1928 which was later sold to the University of Toronto.

WHAT WILL I LEARN? Instruction during the field session deals with excavation practices, data recording, flotation, mapping, and photography. You will learn how to use GIS, Total Stations, and Excel. Learned about pedestrian surveys, how to properly excavate (shovel tests and full scale excavation) and identify stratigraphy The fall term is devoted to weekly two-hour laboratory sessions that focus on washing and cataloguing the artifacts excavated.

HOW WILL THIS HELP ME IN THE FUTURE? Teaches you how to use equipment important to many fields of anthropology. Gives you experience to put on your C.V. or resume. Build a working relationship with professors and T.A.s who you work closely with. Good for reference letters for grad schools.

WHY SHOULD I TAKE THE CLASS? You make a contribution to the Ontario archaeological database, and Parks Canada. Good for kinaesthetic learners (people who enjoy working with their hands). You have an active part in your learning experience. Small classes make for easier chances for networking and one on one help. Meet people in your program!

HOW DO I ENROL IN THE CLASS? You must submit an online application of 250 words maximum. It should clearly state why you wish to be in the program and what you intend to get out of the experience. You must also enrol on ROSI during your start time. To see the application, visit this link: http://www.utm.utoronto.ca/anthropology/field- school/field-school-application
