NSTX NSTX TF, PF and umbrella Upgrade Internal ReviewFeb 24, 2010 PF4/5 Loading Conditions PF 5 max ~ 240,000 lbs PF4 max ~ 200,000 lbs PF4 + PF5 max ~ 300,00 lbs PF 5 –current design Max stress ~ 126 MPa Allowable ~ 233 Mpa PF4 –current design Max stress ~ 380 MPa Allowable ~ 233 MPa

NSTX NSTX TF, PF and umbrella Upgrade Internal ReviewFeb 24, 2010 Options To reduce stress to PF4 1) Do nothing 1/16” gap between pf4/5 and support load existing weldment to vessel matching to limit load to weldment on vessel 2) Use current columns disconnect during bake out match to limit load to tabs’ rating field welding/machining 3) PF5 is a strong back to PF4 add clamps/links from PF4 to PF5 no maximum 4) Add new columns, avoiding existing columns and tabs max of 12 columns 5) add strong back 30 Deg segment centered on new columns 6 such strong backs(50%) of circumference 6) Combinations of 3,4,and 5

NSTX NSTX TF, PF and umbrella Upgrade Internal ReviewFeb 24, 2010 Options chosen - modifications to current design Option 3 connect PF4 to PF5 -clamps Option 4 if required Add more columns to PF5

NSTX NSTX TF, PF and umbrella Upgrade Internal ReviewFeb 24, 2010 Minimum effort - less shape fidelity Use as it- coil is not free to move at control points maximum stress to coil < 10,000 psi do nothing except alignment at room Temp Max 5 mm alignment to magnetic center Include compliances to existing constraints Introduce springs (less rigid) shape constraints Matched shape at room temperature Relax during bake-out During coil operation -displacement to springs -Allow profile to change- reduces shape fidelity - Increase the force during operation from room temperature via soft spring but not as much as using as it Offset shape constraints (variation of springs)

NSTX NSTX TF, PF and umbrella Upgrade Internal ReviewFeb 24, 2010 Temperature rise -Maximum shape fidelity Match profile at Maximum operating temperature-use existing constraint alignment shape control Periodic symmetry at best in all situation Always operate at this set temperature, if required additional heat (hot water) to maintain temp Relax during bake out-loss of shape Relax at room temperature-loss of shape Current data show recovery from relax shape to proper shape is adequate Smart/shape material-passive type-less effort

NSTX NSTX TF, PF and umbrella Upgrade Internal ReviewFeb 24, 2010 Maximum shape fidelity vs ease What is preferred Shape fidelity? Effort? Suggested plan of action PS copper is chilled-12 C Match profile at Maximum operating temperature-use existing constraints off set shape control compressed coil to correct profile Undo compression by.1” Radius use gaps if compression of coil is small Or heat coil to max temp Error ~.15% diameter Alignment 5mm Field measurement at both conditions

NSTX NSTX TF, PF and umbrella Upgrade Internal ReviewFeb 24, 2010 TF effort Being analyzed for hardware selection Path forward Outer rings 1 Fix link per TF (6 degree of constraints) 1 pinned link per TF( 4 degree of constraints) 2 joints totally Inner rings not required Compliant Links (new) to clevis( use as is) with load ratings ~ 5000 lbs or so Pinned to TF Pinned to clevis

NSTX NSTX TF, PF and umbrella Upgrade Internal ReviewFeb 24, 2010 Stress over view Von Mises Stress Most 20,000 psi High points ~ 30,000 psi, Clamp /Cu interface Cu to Al block ~TBD

NSTX NSTX TF, PF and umbrella Upgrade Internal ReviewFeb 24, 2010 Overall Displacement Displacement Max ~.67” Between PF5 ~.5” Outer ring 1 Fixed 1 pinned Compliant links 1 Pin at Tf and pin at clevis Limit loads ~ 7,500 lbs Displace further reduced

NSTX NSTX TF, PF and umbrella Upgrade Internal ReviewFeb 24, 2010 Summary-way forward PF4/5 6 columns package more connections from PF4 to PF5 12 columns if required TF Outer rings compliant links (new) to clevis, used as is
