1 Section 5.4 Division of Decimals

2 Topics Covered Dividing Decimals with the TI-34 Rounding Quotients
Applications of Decimal Division

3 Dividing Decimals with the TI-34
To divide / 4.6 do the following; Enter Press the [ ] button Enter 4.6 Press [enter]

4 Rounding Quotients To round a quotient we;
Find the quotient using our TI-34 Round the answer to the given place value. Examples: To the nearest hundredth To the nearest thousandth

5 Divide: Round to the nearest tenth
4.5 4.4 -4.5 -4.4

6 Rounding Repeating Decimals
A repeating decimal is a decimal which repeats a pattern of digits infinitely many times When rounding repeating decimals it is necessary to write out enough of the number so that the decimal can be rounded to the given decimal place. To the nearest tenth To the nearest hundredth To the nearest thousandth

7 Application #1 When multiplying or dividing numbers it is important to place the decimal point correctly. In the following problems determine if the number is reasonable. If the number is unreasonable, move the decimal point to a position that makes more sense. Steve computed his gas mileage for his Honda Civic to be 3.2 miles per gallon. Max makes $8.50 per hour. He estimates his weekly paycheck to be $3400

8 Application #2 Brooke owes $39, on the mortgage for her house. If the monthly payment is $695.24, how many months does she still need to pay? How many years is that?

9 Application #3 According to government tests, the 2009 Toyota Prius, a hybrid car, gets 45 miles per gallon of gas. If gasoline sells at $3.20 per gallon, how many miles will a Prius travel on $20.00 of gas?

10 Application #4 Alicia rides her bike 33.2 mi in 2.5 hr. What is her speed in miles per hour? Round to one decimal place.

11 Application #5 A standard 75-watt light bulb costs $0.75 and lasts about 800 hr. An energy efficient fluorescent bulb that gives off the same amount of light costs $5.00 and lasts for 10,000 hr. How many standard light bulbs would be needed to provide 10,000 hr of light? How much would it cost using standard light bulbs to provide 10,000 hr of light? Which is more cost effective?

12 Application #6 Manny hikes 12 mi in 5.5 hr. What is his speed in miles per hour? Round to one decimal place.

13 Application #7 A membership at a health club costs $560 per year. The club has a payment plan in which a member can pay $50 down and the rest in 12 equal installments. How much is each payment?

14 Application #8 Population density is defined to be the number of people per square mile of land area. If California has 42,475,000 people with a land area of 155,959 square miles, what is the population density? Round to the nearest whole unit.
