Do noW: In 2-3 sentences, summarized what we learned yesterday. Be sure to highlight what you think were the most important parts of the lesson.

What is Imperialism? Imperialism is when a nation works to expand its economic, political, or military control over weaker nations What makes another nation weak? What attitude does the cartoonist have regarding imperialism?

Is imperialism anything new? within America for other countries

Three factors 1- Desire for military strength (political) 2- Desire for new markets (economic) 3- Belief in cultural superiority (social)

Political- -Alfred T. Mahan -- US Navy Admiral -Advocated for the United States to build Navy in order for the nation to compete with other nations -USA grows to be the third largest navy in the world

Influence of Sea Power on History... The interesting and significant feature of this changing attitude is the turning of the eyes outward, instead of inward only, to seek the welfare of the country. To affirm the importance of distant markets, and the relation to them of our own immense powers of production, implies logically the recognition of the link that joins the products and the markets,--that is, the carrying trade; the three together constituting that chain of maritime power to which Great Britain owes her wealth and greatness. Further, is it too much to say that, as two of these links, the shipping and the markets, are exterior to our own borders, the acknowledgment of them carries with it a view of the relations of the United States to the world radically distinct from the simple idea of self- sufficiency? We shall not follow far this line of thought before there will dawn the realization of America's unique position, facing the older worlds of the East and West, her shores washed by the oceans which touch the one or the other, but which are common to her alone....

What are some similarities between Mahan and Turner’s ideas?

Economic -US expands & became more industrial. -The nation needed new trading partners for both the import of raw materials and export of agricultural and manufactured goods from within the nation

Social What do you know about Charles Darwin & evolution?

The resources of an environment are limited. Creatures produce more offspring than can possibly survive. Members of a species must compete for limited resources and for survival. No two members of a species are exactly alike. Each organism contains an individual combination of inherited traits. Some traits are useful for survival; other traits are not. Organisms that have useful traits reproduce in greater numbers. Their offspring inherit the traits. Organisms with unfavorable traits eventually die off. The fittest survive. Nature selects different traits at different times. Varieties within a species gradually create a new species. How can you apply these concept to society?

Social Darwinism -The belief that the free-market would lead to the survival of the fittest. -Culturally, Americans felt they had the obligation to spread Christianity and “civilization” to those who were considered inferior

White Man’s Burden What is the author’s take on imperialism? Is the tone positive or negative? What is your opinion on Kipling’s poem? How do you feel about imperialism after reading Kipling’s poem? What are four responsibilities and four consequences of the “White Man?”

What do these images tell us about the “White Man’s Burden?” Do you agree or disagree with either depiction? Why or why not? Do you think the “White Man’s Burden” is a concept that meshes well with the American ideals discussed by Turner? How can you apply Kipling’s ideas to historical events that you know of? What about in today’s world?
