14 Whistle blowing is when a worker reports suspected wrongdoing at work. Officially this is called ‘making a disclosure in the public interest’. A worker can report things that aren’t right, are illegal or if anyone at work is neglecting their duties, including: someone’s health and safety is in danger damage to the environment a criminal offence the company isn’t obeying the law (like not having the right insurance) covering up wrongdoing (Gov. (2013) Although all of these are factors that an individual can Whistle blow upon; Abuse covers three of those factors. Which ones? 15 Definitions of Whistleblowing ‘’The practice of informing on someone or putting a stop to something’’ (Collins, (2013) ’’Raising a concern about a wrong doing within an organisation. The concern must be a genuine concern about a crime, criminal offence, miscarriage of justice, dangers to health and safety and of the environment – And the cover up of any of these.’’ (Whistlblowing Helpzone. (2013) “Making a disclosure that is in the public interest” (Find law. 2013) Training package:- Abuse and Whistleblowing of Abuse by Jade Claridge 15

17 But am I protected? A lot of individuals are scared to Whistle blow due to fear from colleagues and managers. They are scared that they would be treated as the teller and just outcaste! ‘’The Public Interest Disclosure Act (PIDA) 1998 provides legal protection, in certain circumstances, to workers making disclosures in good faith about malpractice. The Act makes it unlawful for the council to dismiss anyone or allow them to be victimised on the basis that they have made an appropriate lawful disclosure in accordance with the Act.’’ (Wiltshire Council, 2013) Training package:- Abuse and Whistleblowing of Abuse by Jade Claridge 17
