Saint Patricks Day Homework By Emma O’Carroll

Saint Patrick Who was Saint Patrick and why is he so important to Ireland? Saint Patrick was a Christian Saint and is now know all around the world as Ireland’s apostle. He lived during the fifth century. Legend has it that Saint Patrick brought Christianity to Ireland using a four leaf clover also know as a shamrock. He stated that the shamrock represented the father, the son, the holy sprit, and god’s grace. These being God’s divine beings. Another legend says that Saint Patrick drove all the snakes away from Ireland using a wooden staff to drive them into the sea, he then banished them forever. His death is believed to have been on the 17 th of March 461. This day is now celebrated all around the world as Saint Patrick's day and is a way of remembering him. Scientists have proven that snakes were never in Ireland in the first place. Snakes originally come from Gondwanaland 100 million years ago and at this time Ireland was still underwater and even if they did make it to Ireland they would have died because of the bitter cold temperatures caused by the ice age. But there is no evidence to prove that he didn’t use a four leaf clover to explain to people about God. I personally think that the legend about the snakes is not true but the legend which states that he used a four leaf clover to explain to people about Christianity could be true. Many people believe that Saint Patrick did banish snakes from Ireland but I don’t think he did.

Clover Why is the Clover special to the Irish? The clover also known as the shamrock was used to educate people about God. It showed the father, the son and the holy spirit. The forth leaf however was a sign of god’s grace. Now days finding a four leaf clover is a sign of good luck and it is a very rare occurrence to find one. The clover or Shamrock is believed to be lucky because legend has it that Eve carried a clover in the garden of Eden and Celts believed that they drove away evil spirits. Ireland is a very religious country and they are even divided into to separate parts because of religion, so the Irish think it is very important as it is part of their heritage.

The Importance of Green To the Irish, green is a important part of celebrating Saint Patricks Day. People of Irish descent wear green to show that they are supporting their country but nowadays any one wears green to show their support. Also wearing green on Saint Patricks Day is considered to be good luck. Ireland is called the Emerald Isle, this shows that the colour green important to them because their environment around them is green and lush. I personally think that having a colour that is of an importance to you is a good thing. I think this because it shows that you take pride in your country as it represents you as a person and you as a country.

Saint Patrick's Day Celebrations All over the world Saint Patrick’s day is celebrated with parades and festivals. Saint Patricks Day is especially celebrated in America, Canada and Australia because back in the 1800’s the Irish migrated to America and Canada and then Irish immigrants were sent to Australia as slaves. In some countries it is a religious holiday and a feast day such as Ireland but most celebrate it for fun. More than 100 parades are held in America on Saint Patricks Day. The largest of these celebrations are held in New York and Boston but in Chicago they dye the Chicago river green to show their spirit for the holiday. In Ireland it is a week long celebration. People go to mass in the morning and then have a family meal or go celebrate at the pub. This year in Dublin the festivities run from the 16 th to the 19 th of March, this may seem like a long time to some. I personally think that it is a good idea to celebrate the holiday, that way it gives you something to look forward to each year and it brings you together with your community.
