2 Great Lakes Water Authority On January 1 st, 2016 The Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA) officially took over the leadership of the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (DWSD) The City of Troy is a retail customer of the GLWA One of the largest water and wastewater utilities in the nation Member representation of the GLWA City of Detroit Oakland County (City of Troy) Macomb County Wayne County State of Michigan

3 Flint Water Crisis Timeline April 25, 2014 Flint disconnects from the DWSD June 1, 2014 Flint residents address the smell, taste, and discoloration of the water January 2, 2015 The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality finds Flint’s drinking water to have elevated levels of disinfectant byproduct February 25, 2015 Flint water test reveals exceedingly high level of lead in a resident’s home September 19, 2015 Virginia Tech researchers find high levels of lead across Flint June 23, 2015 The Coalition for Clean Water files a lawsuit to force Flint to switch back to Detroit water October 1, 2015 Flint issues a lead advisory and Genesee County declares a public health emergency October 16, 2015 Flint reconnects to Detroit’s water system December 15, 2015 Flint declares a local state of emergency January 5, 2016 Governor Snyder declares a state of emergency in Flint

5 1.UNTREATED WATER CAN CAUSE AN IMBALANCE IN THE pH LEVEL, CAUSING IT BE CORROSIVE 2.THE CORROSIVE WATER WARES AWAY THE PROTECTIVE COATING KEEPING THE LEAD IN THE PIPES FROM COMING IN CONTACT WITH THE WATER 3.ONCE THE PROTECTIVE COATING IS GONE, THE LEAD WILL BEGIN MIGRATING THROUGHOUT THE SYSTEM AND INTO HOMES Untreated water can cause an imbalance in the pH level, causing it be corrosive The corrosive water wears away the protective coating that keeps the lead in pipes from coming in contact with the water Once the protective coating is gone, the lead will begin migrating throughout the system and into homes

7 Troy Water & Sewer Department Troy receives 100% of our water from the GLWA Treatment Plants Troy is constantly upgrading the water and sewer system Modern infrastructure Proactive maintenance Backflow Testing Program Meter Replacement Program Any water that GLWA sends to Flint can not end up in Troy Backflow prevention Pumping operations
