3. Periodicals Magazines and newspapers are called periodicals because they are published periodically: Daily – once a day Weekly – once a week Monthly – once a month Bimonthly – every other month Quarterly – four times a year

5. Current Issues Current (the most recent) periodical issues are kept on the magazine rack to the right of the library doors in alphabetical order by title To make the experience a better one for all students accessing periodicals, they should be put back where they belong.

Back Issues Back issues are kept in boxes that are arranged alphabetically by title Within the boxes, the back issues are in chronological order To keep the magazines in order in the boxes, only one person may use a box at a time, and should use a book stick whenever removing an issue to ensure putting it back in the same place

7. Research! Magazines and newspapers offer short articles with a great deal of current information, making them a good choice for reference

8. Explore! Many magazines and their issues are based on a theme of interest

9. Discover! Discovery magazines often include fiction, nonfiction, and activities

10. Enrich! Some magazines are about hobbies and special interests

11. Learn! Many magazines in an elementary school library are about wildlife

12. Enjoy! Some magazines are geared more to girls, while others are geared more to boys.

13. Go online! Some magazines have websites; the URL is located right on the cover

14. Things to consider: What is the date of the periodical? How often do issues appear? Does the periodical contain fiction, nonfiction, or both? What about the periodical appeals to you? How is the periodical useful?

15. Signing out a Periodical A periodical counts as your NONFICTION selection Be prepared to tell the person at the circ desk the date (both the month and the year) of the periodical you are signing out Keep the magazine in the envelope when you are not reading it, and return it in the envelope
