Imitation Poem Read the following stanza from the poem we just read. I wandered lonely as a cloud That floats on high o’er vales and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden daffodils, Beside the lake, beneath the trees Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.  How is the stanza arranged? 2. Do you notice any specific phrases used? 3. What is it describing?

Prewriting Make a list of concrete nouns. Select one concrete noun from your list. Think of what the item you have chosen is like. Consider its shape, size, color, textures, and purposes. Example: a pen Shape- long, slender, round Size- finger, ½” thick, straw-sized Color- blue/black, red/green, purple Texture- smooth, cool Purposes- write, draw communicate

Prewriting Think of other objects that have some of the same qualities that you have listed. For example: needle (slender), straw (long and round), paintbrush (draw/paint), river (long, slender, blue) Try to think outside of the box!

Drafting Write a poem like Wordsworth’s where you compare one thing to other things. Use this pattern: A _____________ is like a _____________ In the first blank put the item you have chosen; in the second blank put what the item is like. Example: A pen is like a needle. A pen is like a straw. A pen is like a paintbrush. A pen is like a flash flood.

Now, what can we do to improve the beginning of this poem? What is this process called?

Revising I Change nouns. Add phrases and clauses (add an adverbial clause beginning with “because”). Explain why or how your object is like the object you’re comparing it to. Example: A pen is like a needle because I use it to sew my thoughts into words A pen is like a straw because it sucks the words out of my brain and lands them on the page. A pen is like a paintbrush because I use it to paint my paper with words. A pen is like a flash flood because it lets my words flow onto the page.

Revising II Change nouns. Add phrases and clauses. Try to get rid of a few instances of “because.” Change how the clause is written. For example: A pen is like a needle; with it, I stitch together words and thoughts. A pen is like a straw because it sucks sloshy words out of my brain and drips them onto the page. A pen is like a paintbrush; with it, I color my paper with word-art. A pen is like a river because it lets my words gush onto the dry valley of the page.

Editing/ Publishing Check to see that your revision has commas, periods, apostrophes, and question marks in the right places. Check to see that all of the words are spelled correctly. You will create a final copy and share with your group.

Assessment Form ___The poem compares things. ___Each line compares two things; reasons for the comparisons are also given. ___The ideas and images in the poem fit together; they make sense together, and they work to support the main idea being expressed in the poem. ___The poem contains concrete, specific language. ___Phrases and clauses are used effectively. ___Mechanical, spelling, and punctuation errors have been avoided.
