Ocean Floor Features

What you need to know You need to know where and what the Deep Ocean basin, continental margin, shelf, slope, and rise, shoreline, abyssal plain, seamount, guyot, trench, and a mid- Atlantic ridge are.

The Continental Slope, Shelf, Rise, and Margin Continental Shelf -Relatively flat part of a continental margin that is covered by shallow ocean water. Continental Slope -Part of the continental margin at the edge of a continental shelf where the ocean plunges steeply at 4 to 5 kilometers. Continental Rise - Part of a continental margin that separates a continental slope and the ocean floor. Continental Margin-Area where underwater edge of a continent meets the ocean floor.

Shoreline, Deep Ocean Basin, and Abyssal Plain. Shoreline-Boundary where the land and the sea meet Deep Ocean Basin-Oceanic Crust/Abyssal Plain Abyssal Plain-Large flat area on the ocean floor.

Active Vs. Passive Continental Margins Active Margins-Commonly the sites of earthquakes, volcanoes, mountain building, and the formation of new igneous rock. Passive Margins- Flat land extending both directions from the beach, long river systems, and the accumulation of thick piles of sedimentary debris on the relatively wide continental shelves.
