Present status and challenges of the LdV “STRENGTH” project: Why “STRENGTH”? Nikolay Vassilev and Maria Vassileva University of Granada STRENGTH 2013-1-ES1-LEO05-66726 SEPIE Servicio Español para la Internacionalización de la Educación

Why “STRENGTH” is necessary? STRENGTH 2013-1-ES1-LEO05-66726 SEPIE Servicio Español para la Internacionalización de la Educación

The National Reports of the Project participants agree that greening the economy and the corresponding education is a multi- dimensional challenge and therefore must be addressed through specific measures at the sectorial level that include targeted economic, employment and skills- development education policies. STRENGTH 2013-1-ES1-LEO05-66726 SEPIE Servicio Español para la Internacionalización de la Educación

Main points of the presentation * What is Chemical Engineering? STRENGTH 2013-1-ES1-LEO05-66726 SEPIE Servicio Español para la Internacionalización de la Educación * What is Green Economy and Green Chemistry? * Green Skills in Chemical Engineering * What are Green Jobs? * Do we really need all this?

* What is Chemical Engineering? STRENGTH 2013-1-ES1-LEO05-66726 SEPIE Servicio Español para la Internacionalización de la Educación Chemical engineering, as an academic discipline, involves the design and management of biological, chemical and physical processes that convert raw materials into valuable products.

STRENGTH 2013-1-ES1-LEO05-66726 SEPIE Servicio Español para la Internacionalización de la Educación What is Green Economy and Green Chemistry? A green economy is one that results in improved human well-being and social equity, while significantly reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcities.

STRENGTH 2013-1-ES1-LEO05-66726 SEPIE Servicio Español para la Internacionalización de la Educación What is Green Economy and Green Chemistry? Green Chemistry (including Chemical Engineering) can be defined as the “design of chemical products and processes to reduce or eliminate the use and generation of hazardous substances”.

STRENGTH 2013-1-ES1-LEO05-66726 SEPIE Servicio Español para la Internacionalización de la Educación * What are Green Jobs? Green jobs are jobs created, under decent work conditions, in activities that reduce environmental impacts of sectors, companies and economies.

STRENGTH 2013-1-ES1-LEO05-66726 SEPIE Servicio Español para la Internacionalización de la Educación * Green Skills in Chemical Engineering The CEDEFOR defines green skills as “the knowledge, abilities, values and attitudes needed to live in, develop and support a sustainable and resource- efficient society”. The United Nations defines green jobs as sectors and jobs in which waste creation and pollution is minimized.

STRENGTH 2013-1-ES1-LEO05-66726 SEPIE Servicio Español para la Internacionalización de la Educación * Do we really need all this? Green skills will be needed by all sectors and at all levels in the workforce but particularly in industries that contaminate, such as the Chemical Industry.

STRENGTH 2013-1-ES1-LEO05-66726 SEPIE Servicio Español para la Internacionalización de la Educación One of the things many experts say is that a Master’s degree is not as required in Chemical Engineering as maybe in some other professions. However, it’s a very good idea for chemical engineers to go back to school and get additional courses in Biotechnology and Industrial Microbiology, Food Science and Technology, and Pharma-Industry following the model developed by the STRENGTH Project.

STRENGTH 2013-1-ES1-LEO05-66726 SEPIE Servicio Español para la Internacionalización de la Educación Thank you for the attention
