Library resources = $$$
3
What’s the point of having them if our students don’t know they exist?

Two islands of info Online CMS/LMS Library presence was not a consideration in development Rarely a specific librarian role Library Website Usually geared towards face-to-face students Might have an info page specifically for distance learners http://www.flickr.com/photos/criminalintent/164893152/

Options for providing library presence for online learners 1.Macro approach – a single global presence for all online courses 2.Micro approach – course-integrated presence

IM Reference Initially was not popular because of demographics. Embedded widget made all the difference

Being There: Embedded Librarian Project
29
Conclusion Many students still used their preferred methods of communication Pay-off not worth the time commitment Students did not need us to be more accessible Expanding the hours of coverage was more important Weekend email reference coverage
30
Feedback and Stats Students only visited databases page for the most part Many students unaware of what the library has to offer Many students still don’t look at our instructional content Some students are still unhappy with our availability
31
What I learned Most students will only look at one page, so all important info needs to be there. Library instruction needs to be right at the point- of-need and integrated into the course Reference interactions, student feedback and web stats will tell you a lot about what you need to be focusing on. Find out when your students are doing research – don’t rely on anecdotal reports. Reducing barriers to access is critical.
32
What I learned Figure out how YOUR STUDENTS want to get help from the library – you may be surprised! Pilot projects are a low-risk way to try out new service models. Consider the maintenance requirements of any project. Good relationships with faculty and instructional designers are critical. You’ll NEVER make everyone happy.
