2 Aims of the symposium Opportunity for PhD students to: test research ideas among a wider audience present current progress and future plans receive constructive criticism and insight from mentors and fellow students gain a wider understanding of the field through exposure to a number of different topics practise presenting work in an informal setting

3 Some facts and figures 19 submissions: identical to that of 2007 (Korea) but fewer than last year (Karlsruhe) In 2008 submissions were high (27) due to large entry from Karlsruhe and other German institutions. Acceptance rate for full papers was 37% Acceptance rate for papers + posters was 68% (last year 51%) Acceptance figures are similar to 2007. But quality has improved!

7 Advice for future submissions Do a PhD in Germany :-)‏ Last year, the advice was to do a PhD in Switzerland. So it pays to keep track of trends :-)

8 Some presentation advice Stick to the time limit. Give a general overview rather than precise details Stick to the time limit. Don't let your audience fall asleep. Stick to the time limit. Speak slowly and clearly. Stick to the time limit

9 Some suggestions for mentors Mentors should lead the discussion after the talk You may comment on not just the work presented, but the overall PhD plan, presentation, slides etc. You don't have to focus just on your assigned student(s)‏ Please try to use the time in breaks and lunch for futher interaction with the students
