3 Grammar 1 Identify the parts of the sentence: Marsha laughed at Marin’s joke.

4 Grammar 1: Answers Marsha laughed at Marin’s joke. Marsha – Proper Noun Laughed – Verb At – Preposition Marin’s – Adjective/Proper Noun Joke - noun

5 Grammar 2 - Fix My mom said “The docter said “Take two tablets before diner and your fevar will go away.” I think your going to be able to go to school tomarrow’.

6 Grammar - Answers My mom said “The docter said “take two tablets before diner and your fevar will go away.” I think your going to be able to go to school tomarrow’. (12) My mom said, “The doctor said, ‘Take two tablets before dinner and your fever will go away.’ I think you’re going to be able to go to school tomorrow.”

9 Subtext Subtext o An underlying and often distinct theme in a piece of writing or conversation o The underlying personality of a dramatic character as implied or indicated by a script or text (how a character is interpreted by an actor in a performance)

10 Subtext Subtext o How we will approach… Attempt to get into the mind of a particular character in a story Use context, plot devices, and characterization Write in the 1 st person point of view

11 Subtext Subtext Guiding Thoughts o How you think the character is feeling o The qualities or personality traits the character is displaying o The circumstances that are affecting his/her actions o What seems to be motivating the character o How the character reacts to the other characters and the key conflicts in the scene

12 Dana What do you think is going on in Dana’s mind based on how Butler has characterized her thus far? Subtext what she could be thinking and feeling that Butler has not given us. Use guiding thoughts if you are stuck. “Before me was a wide tranquil river, and near the middle of that river was a child splashing, screaming…”(13). Sustained Writing – Five minutes

14 Unknown Man Who is this man? What is he doing here? What do you think the man is feeling? How will he deal with the given situation? How might he react to the other characters in the scene? Use guiding thoughts if stuck. “What the devil’s going on here?’ A man’s voice, angry and demanding…” (14). Sustained writing – 5 minutes

17 Dana OR Kevin What is the character thinking? Feeling? What does he/she believe happened? Does he/she believe the other person’s story? Ground your answers in what has been provided thus far: context, plot, characterization. “Oh, no…’ I shook my head slowly. ‘All that couldn’t have happened in just seconds.’ He said nothing” (16).
