1 Distributive property
EQUATIONS Distributive property

2 Warm up The length of a rectangle is 5cm more than twice the width. The perimeter is 82cm. Find the length and width. 10x – 4x – 5 = 25 Find the slope of a line using the points (0, 1) and (10, 6) Find the πŸπŸ’πŸ’

3 Steps To Solve Equations Using the Distributive Property
Get rid of the parenthesis by distributing. Combine like terms. Move the smaller number of x’s to one side. Move all numbers to the other side. Get x all by itself. Check your answer in the original equation. Circle answer. Show work in the check!

4 Example  5(m - 6) = 10 5m - 30 = 10 + 30 +30 5m = 40 5 5 m = 8
5m = 40 m = 8 Get rid of parenthesis first by distributing. Combine like terms if necessary. Solve using one/two step rules. 5(8 - 6) = 10 5(2) = 10 10 = 10  Check your answer by substituting your answer into the original equation.

5 Example Distribute if you can. Combine like terms to simplify.
-4 y = 16 y = -4 Distribute if you can. Combine like terms to simplify. Isolate the variable. Solve using one/two step rules. Check your answer 15 – 4 ( y + 3 ) = 19 15 – 4 ( ) = 19 – = 19 31 – = 19 19 = 19

6 Example 3(2x + 5) = 39 Distribute if you can.
Combine like terms to simplify. Isolate the variable. Solve using one/two step rules. Check your answer.

7 Example - 4(8 + 5n) = 8 Distribute if you can.
Combine like terms to simplify. Isolate the variable. Solve using one/two step rules. Check your answer.

8 Example 2( 4x + 3) – 5(2x – 1) = 27 Distribute if you can.
Combine like terms to simplify. Isolate the variable. Solve using one/two step rules. Check your answer.

9 Example ΒΌ (12 x – 16) + x = 20 Distribute if you can.
Combine like terms to simplify. Isolate the variable. Solve using one/two step rules. Check your answer

10 Six friends go to the movies
Six friends go to the movies. Movie tickets are $5 and treats are $2 each. If all 6 friends bought the same number of treats, how many did each person buy if the total spent by all was $54? 6(5 + 2x) = 54 x = 54 12x = 24 x = 2 6 ( 5 + 2x ) = 54 6 ( 5 + 2*2) = ( ) = (9) = = 54

11 Classwork Work with your group to complete the β€œplace mats”. I will be taking this in for a classwork grade.

12 Homework Tonight’s homework is complete the problem solving worksheet started on Friday. Show all your work!
