The Audience 3 John 1 The elder unto the wellbeloved Gaius, whom I love in the truth (1, 2, 5, 11—Gaius is beloved) –Why? 3 John 3-5 For I rejoiced greatly, when the brethren came and testified of the truth that is in thee, even as thou walkest in the truth. I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth. Beloved, thou doest faithfully whatsoever thou doest to the brethren, and to strangers

4. The Audience 3 John 1:2 Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth. –Gaius was likely poor and in poor health –But his spiritual health was excellent

The Aspects Gaius is compared to two other individuals: 1)Diotrephes –3 John 9-10 I wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not…prating against us with malicious words: and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and forbiddeth them that would, and casteth them out of the church

The Application 1)We must be Gaius and Demetrius –Matthew 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. –Galatians 6:10 As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.

8. The Application I Timothy 3:7 Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil. –Are we working towards such a goal?

The Application We must not be Diotrephes –Matthew 20:25-28 But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them. But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister; And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant: Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
