4 Task 1: You have each been assigned a number between 1-4. When your teacher calls your number you must come up to the front of the class where you will be shown an image. You will be given 30 seconds to remember as many of the images as possible. When you return to your groups you must draw as many of the images you can.

5 Task 2: As a group, answer the questions on page 2 of your booklet. Can you come up with any ideas on what is meant by the term Sustainable Living? Mind map any ideas you have on page 2.

6 What is Sustainability? Sustainability is a term used very widely today, but what does it actually mean? ‘The term sustainability takes into consideration future developments and changes that do not damage the environment, create economic growth and benefit the lives of people (social) simultaneously (at the same time). It also takes into account the well-being and quality of life of present and future generations.’

7 Social, economic and environmental factors overlap and all have an important role to play in sustainability.

8 Task 3: In talking partners, discuss why you think it is important that as individuals we try to live sustainably? Write your thoughts on page 3 of your booklet.

9 Understanding the term PESTLE Political – Are there government restrictions? Are there trade or safety regulations? Are there employment laws? Economic – Consideration of inflation, interest rates, economic growth, the unemployment rate and policies, and the business cycle followed in the country. Social – Consideration of the consumer or lifestyle attitudes of people. Are there any cultural limitations? Technological - How technology can either positively or negatively impact the introduction of a product or service into a marketplace is assessed here. Legislative – Investigation of various laws including discrimination laws, health and safety laws, consumer protection laws and copyright and patent laws. Environmental – Looking at the laws regarding pollution and recycling, waste management and the use of green or eco- friendly products and practices.

10 Plenary: Have you worked well as a group? Who came up with the best ideas? Did anyone take on a leadership role within their group? How did you use your critical thinking skills today? Can you give a definition for any PESTLE terms?
