2 ProblemsStrategies Sentences are long and confusing. 1.Read aloud. 2.Divide each sentence into parts, and analyze each part. 3.Express each sentence in your own words. Ideas are complicated and hard to understand. 1.Reread the material. 2.Rephrase or explain in own words. 3.Make an outline. 4.Study with a classmate; discuss ideas. 5.Look up unfamiliar words. Material is poorly organized. 1.Pay attention to the headings. 2.Pay attention to the introduction (thesis) or the teacher’s introduction.

3 ProblemsStrategies Material contains unfamiliar words 1.Look for meaning in surrounding text. 2.Try pronouncing words aloud to see if they remind you of familiar words. 3.Break words into parts. 4.Use a dictionary! Material is not interesting. 1.Try to relate the topic to your life. 2.Work with a classmate to discuss / share. You cannot relate to the ideas. 1.Find out background on author or time period. 2.Imagine yourself have the author’s experience. How would you react differently?
