1 Basic MLA Formatting Giving Credit Where Credit is Due

2 What is MLA? MLA is… An acronym for Modern Language Association The preferred method of citation for English and other humanities courses (languages, art, etc.) A way to emphasize the authorship of a cited source In other words, MLA formatting is a way to show where our ideas and evidence come from.

3 MLA Formatting dictates… Your font/size choices (Times New Roman, 12) Your heading format Your citation format (in-text) The way you write numbers and contractions The way you list your references at the end of your writing (works cited page, reverse indentation)

4 Focus: Works Cited Page Book: Last name, First name. Title of Book. City of Publication: Publisher, Year of Publication. Medium of Publication. More than one author: 2 : list both author’s names; only the first one is in reverse 3+ : list only the first author’s name followed by “et. al”

5 Focus: Works Cited Page Periodical (Magazines and Newspapers) Author(s). "Title of Article." Title of Periodical Day Month Year: pages. Medium of publication. **Follow the same rules for names as for books!

6 Focus: Works Cited Page Online/Electronic Sources Editor, author, or compiler name (if available). Name of Site. Version number. Name of institution/organization affiliated with the site (sponsor or publisher), date of resource creation (if available). Medium of publication. Date of access.

8 Focus: In-Text Citations “Quoted material quoted material” (Author pg). As author states, “quoted material quoted material” (pg). Paraphrased material (Author pg).
